We’re not graffiti artists. We don’t condone vandalism. So what’s with the graffiti?

If you’ve ever been to Seattle, you’ve likely been to the Pike Place Market. It’s a beautiful place, always alive with new faces, new conversation, new tastes and smells to experience every time you visit. It changes every day – and constantly evolves to meet the needs of the people who use it as a tourist attraction, as well as the people who live in Seattle who use it to nourish their lives.

Underneath the Pike Place Market is a tiny, dark inlet called Post Alley. On one side of Post Alley is the Gum Wall, a wonderfully disgusting collection of thousands of pieces of chewed gum stuck against the wall of the building. Just opposite of that wall you’ll see the above example of Seattle graffiti. Except that it probably won’t look like this. Because graffiti art, just like the conversation with your customers, is continually evolving. Messages, content and platforms that connected with them yesterday might not necessarily connect with them tomorrow.

Graffiti is an aspect of our brand designed to continually remind us that conversation has limitless forms. We may not always understand them. And we may not always agree with them.  But if graffiti happens to be the language your audience uses to communicate, your brand had better buy a few cans of spray paint.

There are many graffiti artists that possess massive amounts talent, and they’ll never be known to a greater audience. Graffiti art is generally anonymous – because in most places it’s illegal.  But for one reason or another, these artists feel they have no other place to express themselves.  We can use the same analogy for your brand’s audience. Customers want to be heard. They want to have a voice. You may believe they should paint on a canvas – and you’ll never connect with them.  Meet them on their turf, using their language, and you’ll earn a powerful connection for life.
